Famous charts
In short: Vincent van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 at 11:00 in Zundert, the Netherlands. His chart has an Aries Sun high in the 10th house, a Pisces Midheaven with Venus and Mars beside it, and a North Node in the 12th house of solitude and imagination. Read together, it describes a man born to serve generously, called to turn inward, and known for bold, imaginative art that moves people. Which is, almost exactly, the life he lived.
| Point | Placement | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries, 10th house | Who he is: a pioneer, seen through his work |

| Midheaven | Pisces, with Mars and Venus beside it | What he can be known for |
| MC ruler | Neptune in Pisces, 9th house | Where that work is built |
| South Node | Sagittarius, 6th house, with Jupiter and the Moon | What comes naturally |
| North Node | Gemini, 12th house | What he is growing into |

SkyPath reads a calling the way an ikigai is drawn: four circles, each read from one point of the chart, and the calling where they meet.
What lights him up: bringing creative work into view
Van Gogh’s Sun is in Aries, the sign of beginnings and courage, in the 10th house, the house of work done in public. With Mercury beside it, this is someone who comes alive leading the way in work others can see. And he did lead: with colour so bold it unsettled people at the time, he helped open the door to modern painting.

What comes naturally: generous, caring service, guided by the bigger picture
His South Node, the gift he was born with, is in Sagittarius in the 6th house of daily work and service, with Jupiter, the planet of faith and generosity, and the Moon, the planet of care, sitting right on it. Before he ever painted, this was his life: he wanted to serve, and to serve something larger than himself. He trained to preach, and in the mining region of the Borinage in Belgium he gave away his own things to the miners he was meant to guide.
South Node in Sagittarius in the 6th, with Jupiter and the Moon on it. The Moon also rules his Cancer rising.
What he can be known for: art that heals and moves people
His Midheaven, the point of the work the world knows you for, is in Pisces: imagination, compassion, the unseen. Venus, the planet of art and beauty, and Mars, the planet of action, both sit beside it. Its ruler, Neptune, is in Pisces too, in the 9th house of the wider world. Art that is beautiful and forceful at once, that comforts and moves people, and that travels far beyond where it was made: that is how the world now knows him.
Midheaven in Pisces with Mars and Venus; its ruler Neptune in Pisces in the 9th.
What he’s growing into: following curiosity inward, giving it words
His North Node, the direction of his growth, is in Gemini in the 12th house: the house of solitude, imagination and places set apart from ordinary life. Its ruler, his guide, is Mercury, the planet of words. His deepest growth happened in solitude, much of it in the hospital at Saint-Rémy, where he went by his own choice in 1889 and painted The Starry Night. And Mercury gave it words: hundreds of letters, most of them to his brother Theo, which are still read today as some of the most moving writing any artist has left.
North Node in Gemini in the 12th; its ruler Mercury in Aries in the 10th, with the Sun, Venus and Mars.
I lead with courage, and I bring a generous, open-minded care to those I serve. To the world, I offer bold, imaginative work that heals people, born from curiosity I turn inward.
The first sentence is who he was from the start: the Aries courage of his Sun with the generous, faithful service of his South Node. The second is what he gave the world: bold, imaginative art from his Pisces Midheaven, grown through the solitude of his 12th-house North Node.
What strikes me most, as an astrologer, is that his calling never changed, only its form. The young man who gave everything to the miners and the painter who poured himself into sunflowers and stars were serving the same thing: comfort for people, through something bigger than himself. He found his medium late, at 27, and painted most of his best-known work in his last few years.
Van Gogh’s chart shows something true for most of us: a calling isn’t one job. It’s a direction, with more than one way to walk it. The gift you were born with doesn’t get left behind; it gets carried toward something new. Your chart has the same four circles.
